Udugu Retreat: Adventure, Fitness, Brotherhood in Zanzibar, July 12-19, 2027.

UDUGU RETREAT

Zen Boutique Retreat & Resort

July 12th –19th, 2027

Jambiani, Zanzibar

There's a kind of brotherhood that can't be forced into existence over a quick coffee or a weekend golf trip. It needs space, time, sweat, salt water, and a few honest conversations under an African sky. That's what Udugu is built for.

For 8 days, 7 nights a small group of men will trade routine for something rawer: sunrise training sessions on the beach as the Indian Ocean rolls in, dhow sailing trips, ocean swims and paddleboard sessions in some of the clearest water on the planet, and adventure excursions into the spice forests and villages of Zanzibar that most tourists never see. Days are built around movement — strength, breath, endurance, recovery — designed for all men at all fitness levels, not influencers chasing a highlight reel.

But Udugu isn't just a fitness camp with a nice backdrop. The name means "brotherhood" in Swahili, and that's the heart of it. Evenings unfold around firepits and long dinners on Zen Boutique's open-air terraces, where conversation goes beyond small talk — about purpose, pressure, fatherhood, ambition, loss, and what it actually means to show up for you and those around you. No agendas, no forced sharing circles — just the kind of honesty that happens naturally when men train hard together and switch off their phones.

Based at Zen Boutique Retreat & Resort — a boutique, purpose-built sanctuary on Jambiani's east coast— every detail is dialled in: private villas, exceptional food, warm hospitality, and an environment designed for genuine reset. Add in the rhythm of Zanzibar itself — the call to prayer at dusk, the tide rolling out for miles, the seaweed farmers and fishermen who've worked this coast for generations — and you get a setting that does half the work of slowing a man down. Zen Boutique has the best of both worlds, set back in the lush jungle village and  just a 10 min walk to the stunning indian ocean.

Udugu is for men who are successful by most measures but know something's missing — connection, challenge, clarity. It's for men ready to push their bodies, open up a little, and leave not just rested, but changed, with a handful of brothers who'll hold them to it.

Come as men. Leave as brothers.

THE TRAINING — UDUGU FITNESS

THE BROTHERHOOD — UDUGU TOGETHER

THE ADVENTURE — UDUGU EXPLORE

The physical side of Udugu isn't about ego or personal bests. It's about showing up every morning, doing hard things alongside other men, and feeling your body come alive in a way it probably hasn't in years.

Sunrise Indian Ocean HIIT
Each morning starts the same way — on the sand, as the sun comes up over the water. Short, sharp HIIT sessions combining bodyweight strength work, sprints, and ocean-based intervals (think beach burpees followed by a run straight into the surf). Scalable for every fitness level — the goal is effort, not perfection.

Beach & Village Runs
A mix of barefoot beach runs along the shoreline at low tide and routes that wind through nearby Jambiani village — past fishermen hauling in nets, seaweed farmers at work, and local life that most visitors never see. These runs are as much about connection to place as they are about fitness.

Circuit Training
Functional, full-body circuits using minimal equipment — kettlebells, resistance bands, sandbags, and bodyweight movements. Stations are designed to be completed in pairs or small groups, building both strength and that sense of shared effort that runs through the whole week.

Animal Flow & Mobility
Slower-paced sessions focused on animal flow movement patterns and deep stretching — rebuilding mobility, control, and body awareness that's often lost to years at a desk. These sessions are as much about reconnecting with your body as conditioning it.

Hikes
Guided hikes exploring Zanzibar's coastline and inland terrain — a chance to cover real distance, take in the island's landscape beyond the beach, and let conversation flow naturally over a few hours of walking together.

Sunrise Meditation & Yoga
Before the day's training begins, optional sunrise meditation sessions set the tone — a few quiet minutes facing the ocean, breath work, and stillness. Yoga sessions throughout the week focus on flexibility, breath, and recovery, balancing out the more intense physical work and giving the body space to reset.

Every session is designed to meet you where you are — whether that's your first real training week in years or your hundredth. The point isn't to prove anything. It's to feel strong, present, and alive, alongside men doing the same.

Come as men. Leave as brothers.

Beyond the training, beyond the fire circles, Udugu is also about remembering what it feels like to be genuinely curious about the world around you — to explore somewhere new, push a little out of your comfort zone, and see Zanzibar the way few visitors ever get to.

Village & Hidden Beach Cycling
Bikes out, and off along dirt tracks through local villages — waving to kids on their way to school, passing women carrying baskets on their heads, weaving between palm groves and coral rag walls. The routes lead to beaches that don't appear on any map — quiet stretches of white sand and turquoise water, completely empty, where the only plan is to swim, sit, and take it in.

Hikes to Spiritual Caves
Inland hikes leading to Zanzibar's sacred caves — ancient sites still used for prayer and ritual by local communities, steeped in stories passed down for generations. Cool, quiet, and a world away from the beach, these sites add a different kind of depth to the week — a reminder that this island runs far deeper than its coastline.

Dhow Sailing to the Sandbanks
A full-day sailing adventure aboard a traditional wooden dhow, out across the Indian Ocean to the sandbanks — strips of pure white sand that rise out of the sea at low tide and disappear completely at high tide. Out here, with nothing but ocean in every direction, the group will anchor up for swimming, snorkelling, and a barbecue cooked right there on the boat — fresh fish, cold drinks, and views that don't exist anywhere else.

Snorkelling & Mangrove Swims
Along the way, stops to snorkel over coral reefs teeming with fish, followed by a swim through the calm, glassy waters of the mangroves — a completely different ecosystem to the open ocean, with twisted roots, shallow channels, and an almost otherworldly stillness.

Sunset Mangrove Paddleboarding
As the day cools and the light turns gold, a paddleboard session through the mangrove channels — quiet, slow, and one of the most beautiful ways to end a day on the island. The kind of moment that doesn't need much conversation.

Mainland Safari Day
day trip to mainland Tanzania for a safari experience — swapping the ocean for the savannah, and the chance to see Africa's iconic wildlife up close before heading back to Zanzibar.

From hidden beaches to sacred caves, sandbanks to safari plains — the adventure side of Udugu is about reminding a group of men what it feels like to be genuinely excited about a day ahead of them again.

Come as men. Leave as brothers.

Strip away the routines, the screens, the roles we all play back home — and what's left is just men, together, for a week. That's where the real magic of Udugu happens.

Strip away the routines, the screens, the roles we all play back home — and what's left is just men, together, for a week. That's where the real magic of Udugu happens.

Sunrises and Sunsets, Together
Every day starts the same way — the whole group on the beach, watching the sun rise out of the Indian Ocean, the sky turning from grey to gold. And as the day winds down, sunsets take on a different character entirely — watching the light disappear into the bush inland, the sky burning orange and red over the trees. Two ends of the same day, two completely different feelings — and a group of men sharing both.

Around the Fire
This is where the week really lives. Evenings around the fire pit — no phones, no agenda, just conversation that moves wherever it wants to go. Stories from years ago that haven't been told in a long time. Banter that has everyone in stitches. Moments that turn serious without anyone forcing it there. It's the kind of space that's rare for most men — and once you're in it, you realise how much you needed it.

Food, Shared
Hearty barbecue dinners on the beach, fresh fish straight off the boat, healthy lunches that fuel the day's training — meals at Udugu aren't just refuelling, they're another excuse to sit together, eat well, and keep the conversation going.

Leaning On Each Other
Some days will be physically tough. Some conversations will be emotionally heavier than expected. Through all of it, the group learns to support each other — pushing each other through a hard set, checking in after a heavy fire circle, noticing when someone's gone quiet and pulling them back in. That's brotherhood in practice, not just in name.

A Space Without Judgement
Maybe the biggest shift of the week — learning what it feels like to talk openly, without the usual filters men put up around other men. No one-upping, no judgement, no need to perform. Just honesty, met with respect.

Music, Drinks, and Good Company
Some evenings end with a local band playing — guitars, drums, voices carrying out over the sand — while the group winds down with a cold beer or a mocktail, talking, laughing, and soaking up the atmosphere of a place that feels a million miles from home.

Friends for Life
By the end of the week, something has shifted. Strangers who arrived on Day 1 leave as men who've trained together, sailed together, sat with hard conversations together — and walked away with friendships that go far beyond a week in Zanzibar.

Come as men. Leave as brothers.

UDUGU RETREAT — ZANZIBAR, JULY 12–19, 2027

Seven days. Fourteen men. One island.

Udugu is a week-long fitness, adventure, and brotherhood retreat set in the heart of Zanzibar's bush at the purpose-built Zen Boutique Retreat & Resort — a few minutes' walk from the white sands and warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Train hard at sunrise. Sail out to sandbanks. Cycle through villages. Hike to sacred caves. Eat well, recover properly, and spend your evenings around the fire with men who showed up for the same reasons you did.

But more than any of that — talk. Honestly. Without filters, without judgement, without performing.

Udugu is Swahili for brotherhood. And that's exactly what this week is built to create — not the kind that fades when you get home, but the kind forged through shared effort, shared honesty, and seven days in one of the most extraordinary places on earth.

The Venue: ZEN BOUTIQUE RETREAT

Every great retreat needs the right space to hold it — and Zen Boutique wasn't built as an afterthought. It was purpose-built, from the ground up, specifically with retreats like Udugu in mind.

The Location

Tucked into the Zanzibar bush in Jambiani, Zen Boutique sits in its own quiet pocket of the island — surrounded by green, away from the noise and crowds of the more built-up tourist areas. But being immersed in nature didn't mean sacrificing the coast.

The resort was deliberately positioned within easy walking distance of the Indian Ocean and Jambiani's stunning white sand beaches — so guests get the best of both worlds: the privacy and stillness of the bush, and the ocean right on the doorstep for sunrise sessions, swims, and everything the adventure side of the retreat brings.

That sense of privacy runs through everything. Zen Boutique was designed so that a group can take over the space and genuinely feel like it's theirs for the week — no crowds of unrelated guests wandering through, no feeling like you're sharing the experience with strangers. It's an environment built for groups to bond, switch off, and feel completely at ease.

 What Zen Boutique Offers

A gym for training sessions and personal workouts. A dedicated massage area, for proper recovery after the week's physical demands. An outdoor cinema screen, for evenings under the stars. A three-floor bar and restaurant, culminating in a rooftop bar with sweeping sunset views out across the jungle canopy — one of the best seats on the island as the day ends.

A striking 20-metre pool, sleek and cool, perfect for laps or simply unwinding between sessions. And scattered throughout the grounds, multiple intimate, secluded spaces — quiet corners designed for a guest to sit alone, think, journal, or just be still for a while.

And that's just what's immediately visible. Beyond the obvious facilities, every detail of Zen Boutique — from the layout to the materials to the way the spaces connect to each other — has been considered with one goal in mind: creating somewhere that genuinely supports the kind of transformation a retreat like Udugu is built around.

This isn't a hotel that happens to host retreats. It's a venue built for them — and for Udugu, it's home for the week.
